Lafayette Parish Assessor Justin Centanni has released a public information guide explaining five proposed constitutional amendments related to property tax assessment that will appear on the November 3, 2026, ballot.
The guide provides a concise overview of Amendments 1, 2, 6, 9 and 10, including what each proposal would change and what a “yes” or “no” vote would mean for Lafayette taxpayers.
“Constitutional amendments can be difficult to interpret, particularly when they involve property assessments, exemptions and millage rates,” Centanni said. “Our goal is to provide taxpayers with clear, practical information so they can better understand each proposal before casting their vote.”
The proposed amendments address:
• Amendment #1: The transfer of a disabled veteran surviving spouse exemption to a new homestead;
• Amendment #2: Allowing a taxing body to levy a lower millage rate, under certain circumstances;
• Amendment #6: An additional homestead exemption for qualifying Seniors 65+;
• Amendment #9: Increases income limit for the Special Assessment Level (property value "freeze"); and
• Amendment#10: An exemption for qualifying rehabilitated blighted or derelict properties.
The guide is intended for educational purposes and does not advocate for or against any proposed amendment. It focuses on how each measure could affect property assessment, exemptions and local taxing authorities in Lafayette Parish.
“The Assessor’s Office determines property values and administers exemptions established by the Louisiana Constitution,” Centanni explained. “We do not set millage rates or determine how much revenue a taxing authority collects. However, because these proposals directly involve the property tax system, we want taxpayers to have access to information that is straightforward and easy to digest.”
Taxpayers are encouraged to review the guide, learn more about each proposed amendment and make an informed decision on Election Day.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
